Sonic Adventure is still the gold standard for 3D Sonic games

Sonic Forces is a video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for Microsoft Windows , Xbox One and other gaming platforms. The game is an installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and was revealed in celebration of its 25th anniversary. Beloved video game character and pop culture icon, Sonic the Hedgehog, recently passed away this week while undergoing a dangerous medical procedure to extend his lifespan. Despite rigorous medical treatment and Sega’s best efforts, Sonic did not recover.

As far as Sonic games go, it’s surprisingly involved, and its levels have a sense of massive scale that the Genesis games didn’t have. It’s a challenging game, but a great one, and perhaps the pinnacle of the series. And it’s excellent for multiplayer racing as well, for up to eight players. I recently picked up Sonic Mania but there were some gaps in my classic Sonic experience (never played CD or S&K, never finished 3), so I’m playing through them all now before trying Mania.

One of the mini-bosses in the gameAnother frustrating aspect of the game was at certain story beats you’ll be asked to play a short mini-game. These can range from herding a group of Coco like a Visit Web sheepdog to collecting extra computer parts. At best these can be a cute little distraction but at worst they can be rather irritating to get through with awkward controls and needlessly short time limits. It doesn’t help that you’re forced to play through them to advance the plot. The game also has fairly long loading times between parts of the stage.

I’m sure someone out there enjoyed it – and good for them – but the ‘blockbuster’ style it was going for, which was reportedly drawn from the big superhero movies of the time, fell totally flat for me. When people talk about ‘Sonic cringe’, it’s usually the stuff from this game’s story that they’re referring to. The dialogue is basic at best and laughable at worst, and that’s not even mentioning the unintentionally hilarious stuff like the Silver/Shadow fight orTHATkiss.

Going through shooting galleries with Tails and Eggman makes you want to rack up the highest score. Treasure hunting with Knuckles and Rouge allowed players to explore some of the largest stages ever seen in a Sonic game. Right now, the Sonic Frontiers Metascore has review scores averaging 72 for the PlayStation 5, which is the only platform on Metacritic the game has a Metascore right now as of press time.

DLC Instructions

I may have to play it again before I can form a good opinion, but I would, at the very least, give it an honorable mention. I should also mention that the extra Gamecube content is offered on Steam as DLC. I didn’t buy it, but it’s only a few dollars as of this writing. I kinda liked this game, mainly because of how its story is one of the best among Sonic games (which technically isn’t a high bar). And also because you could play as so many characters, each having something unique to offer. Then it was also an open world, which hasn’t been seen in a Sonic game since 06.

The Sonic Riders series could easily have been a decent spiritual successor to Sonic R, if only it had got its fundamentals right. If you value your story content, however, which we Sonic fans have learnt not to, quite honestly, it’s worth noting that the Sonic Riders series re-uses Sonic R’s story, with minor variations, each time. This in turn means that Dr Eggman has distracted Sonic and his friends with a Grand Prix whilst he causes great evil no less than four times so far.

That’s more than 300,000 fewer than the previous Sonic game, Sonic Lost Worldin 2014, and far, far fewer than the 1,850,000 copies of Sonic Generationssold in 2013. Most of us millennials, at some point or another, remember that first time we experienced the blue streak speeding by. Heck, I remember Christmas 1992, when I was four-years-old and unwrapped theSonic the Hedgehog 2 Sega Genesis bundle from “Santa.” Sadly, there have been few Sonic memories worth noting since those Genesis days. Behind the scenes, though, the game faced serious problems. Former Sonic Team head Yuji Naka resigned from Sonic Team in March 2006, leaving director Shun Nakamura with even more pressure on his shoulders. This pressure became even more apparent when the development team was split in two after receiving Wii development kits.
